The New Gods in Zack Snyder’s Justice League

As promised, DC Fandome brought all the noise. Everything from an unexpected full length ‘The Batman’ trailer to Wonder Woman’s Cheetah reveal left fans in an uproar. The response has been beyond exciting. Of all the treats to result from DC’s exhilarating convention, Zack Snyder’s long-awaited Justice League was like a cinematic piñata. After some very hard hits from fans, the Snyder Cut left the Fandome landscape littered with awesome surprises. Chief among these surprises was the live action sneak peek into some of DC’s most famous New Gods.

In his 1971 New Gods #1, Jack Kirby introduced the comic world to his pantheon of New Gods. In the almost 50 years following this issue, the New Gods have yet to experience a theatrical debut. In March of 2018, however, it was announced that Ava Duvernay and Tom King would collaborate on the first New Gods film. Back in May of 2020, Duvernay revealed in a tweet that the script was currently in its 4th Draft. Seeing as the film has yet to enter production, one can only assume that the New Gods are still a long way from theaters, but fortunate for fans, Zack Snyder and HBO Max are prepared to provide the ultimate appetizer.

During Fandome’s Hall of Heroes, Zack Snyder unleashed the first full trailer of The Snyder Cut. This trailer provided us a view of not one, not two, but THREE of Jack Kirby’s creations. Kirby’s New Gods consist of the benevolent inhabitants of New Genesis and the evil citizens of Apokalips. The first of these characters to grace the Snyder Cut trailer was the all-powerful ruler of Apokolips, Darkseid. To anyone familiar with superhero cinema, Darkseid is like Marvel’s Thanos on wicked steroids. While wielding the Anti-Life Equation, he is nearly unstoppable. When the equation is complete, it gives him the ability of total control over the minds of all sentient beings. This ability, in addition to his Omega beams, which are optical energy blasts capable of disintegrating any life form, will make him a foe worthy of uniting the Justice League.

The leader of Darkseid’s army, Steppenwolf, also appears in the Snyder Cut trailer. Now technically Steppenwolf made his first appearance in the 2018 theatrical release of the Justice League, but the character has never been seen in the monstrous way that Snyder has realized him. The character is covered in a spiky armor. His goblin-like face is more frightening than anything from the 2018 film.

The trophy for the biggest surprise appearance will have to go to Desaad. Desaad is Darkseid’s sadistic torturer. He is like Apokalips’s own version of the horror franchise SAW. Now there is no indication of how much of his sociopathic hobbies will make it into Snyder’s final cut, but the character’s appearance in the trailer is a promising sign.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is scheduled for release in 2021 on HBO Max. Snyder has revealed that there will be a total of 4 one-hour long episodes. Sound off in the comments section if you’re as excited as we are for Darkseid’s movie premiere.
